Have Questions? We've Got You

At Meth Mob, we believe that informed clients make empowered decisions. This page is designed to answer common questions about meth contamination, testing, and decontamination in Tooele County.

What is meth contamination, and how does it occur?

Meth contamination happens when methamphetamine is smoked or produced in a property. Most houses in Utah are contaminated as a result of smoking NOT manufacturing. Residue from these activities can settle on surfaces like walls, ceilings, and carpets. Over time, these residues can pose health risks.

Is meth contamination common in Utah?

Yes—unfortunately, meth contamination is more common in Utah than many people realize. Utah consistently ranks among the top 10 states for methamphetamine use, and as of the latest data, is #7 in the nation for meth use per capita (CDC, DEA, NSDUH). According to both the DEA and Utah Department of Health, meth use has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic. While most contamination comes from smoking rather than meth labs, the residue left behind can still pose serious health and property risks if not properly addressed.

How can I tell if a property is contaminated?

Methamphetamine residue is invisible and odorless, making it undetectable without proper testing. Additionally, meth does not off gas over time. This means that if your property tests positive, it won't go away on its own (at least in our lifetimes).

How much does it cost to test for meth?

Along the Wasatch Front, a pre test is $150. Feel free to call and setup an appointment today!

What are Utah's regulations regarding meth contamination?

Utah law mandates that properties with meth residue levels exceeding 1.0 µg/100 cm² must undergo decontamination before occupancy or sale. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) provides detailed guidelines and standards for testing and decontamination.

What timeframe can I expect during a decontamination?

It depends on the test result levels and your specific needs, but generally, it takes about 2 weeks from start to finish. First, we start by submitting a work plan to the health department for a permit. The health department typically takes 2-3 business days to issue the permit from the day we submit. Once we enter the home, it takes about 1 week to complete the decontamination itself and do clearance testing. After we get those test results back, we will send you and the health department a final report. The health department takes an additional 2-3 business days to release the property.
